Ultracam Progress Meeting - 20 June 2001
Attendees: Andy Vick, Derek Ives, Chris Tierney, Stephen Beard, David Atkinson, Nicola Bate, Vikram Dhillon
Absences: Tully Peacock
Optical
- Optics work is now all complete and SPECAC have ordered glass. Vik has also ordered filters and expects to order dichroic next week. This has a 3-month lead time.
- Vik now has the information regarding the orientation of chips from Tully. Vik will be double checking these details with Mark Stevenson.
Electronics/Mechanical
- Nicola Bate has been taken on as a summer student placement and will be assisting David with Peltier and CCD work.
- David has started to look at DSP code and there is a lot of design to be done on this to fit in with the ULTRACAM model.
- He is also looking at Peltier situation and carrying out tests on vacuum enclosure. This has improved quite a bit He has been using Zeolite getter and Nicola has been helping with this in getting towards required temperature.
Software
- Chris now has C++ manuals and has completed approximately 50 % of his training on this. Steven is also been acquainting himself with C++.
- There has been a lot of discussion within the team regarding DSP code. They feel they have finally decided on how low level system is going to work. Almost starting from scratch in terms of software (having to write all low level and high level), but hopefully David can use some of the DSP code already there.
- Steven has been tied up with VISTA work but is hoping to ramp up on ULTRACAM from next week. Andy raised the fact at the PMM that it would be better to have blocks of work time (maybe a week or so at a time) as opposed to occasional hours/half hours here and there.
- The current software workload appears to be able to be completed within budget, but it is felt that it may be a little tight to get inside time (October). Andy will be looking at software design again this week and will pass estimate of working time to Vik.
Chris expressed his concern with timescale and felt that testing time was the main problem. The system is proving to be rather more complex that at first though. Steven, Andy and Chris will be meeting on Monday 25th June to discuss these matters further along with high level software design.
- Chris now has C++ manuals and has completed approximately 50 % of his training on this. Steven is also been
Aristarchos Issues
- Aristarchos and prepared to pay for full set of cables to go through cable rack. Andy to pass full details of requirements to Vik so this can be done before Zeiss ship. Deadline for this is 30th June.
Derek stated that they may be problem with water pipes. According to David's calculations the water chiller position should work okay, but Martyn has a few queries that he would like settled when he is at ATC tomorrow (21st June).
Zeiss system documentation is available and Andy will request that Martyn brings a copy of these with him.
- Derek queried how rack is mounted at Aristorchos telescope. Vik will provide accurate details of this.
AOB
- Vik will be off on holiday tonight for a week. Mark Stevenson will handle workload at Sheffield.
- Mark & Vik wish to visit ATC w/c 2nd July to discuss final mechanical design. The wish Tully and one other ATC member to look over mechanical drawings before clearing for manufacture. Andy will book Engineering time for this and will agree a date with Mark and little close to the time.
