computer simulations of binary star formation |

Left: From top-left to bottom-right, a time sequence showing the collapse and
fragmentation of a molecular cloud core to form a triple stellar system
consisting of a close binary with separation 150 AU (i.e. three times
the distance between the Sun and Pluto) and a more loosely bound third star
about 1000 AU away. Below: The results from a similar computer simulation,
but presented in the form of an animation. A more complex simulation by
Matthew Bate (Exeter)
showing the formation of an entire cluster of stars
is shown in this movie.
