In short-period CVs, the secondary is an M-dwarf and is best observed in the I-band or the K-band.
In longer period CVs, the secondary is a K or G dwarf and is best observed in the R-band.
The secondary stars of all CVs can also be detected via hydrogen and helium emission lines.
